Ice cold cider at Peddlars on the Bend

Nothing like an ice cold cider to quench your (well at least Lois’) thirst at Lunch (I had a beer). We had lunch on Sunday at Peddlars on the Bend, a wonderful restaurant that has both stood the test of time, and the test of a fire. The entire restaurant almost burnt down a few years ago. But thankfully it survived, and after major repairs has been open ever since.

They still have one of the best bars and outside seating in Cape Town, and a wonderful (but more formal) restaurant inside. We spent a leasurely afternoon with some friends enjoying a beer or two, and an amazing meal. The staff are attentive but out of the way, and at about R80-R100 for most main courses, excellent value as well. There is also something for almost anybody; a very well thought-out menu.

Misty Muizenberg

For the last few mornings and evenings, we have been having a rather strange hot and muggy coastal mist, which means that I never seem to see my house in sunlight. Of course the weather at my work in Durbanville is wonderfully sunny. How strange.

This shot is of the pedestrian footbridge crossing Zandvlei on the Muizenberg side of the vlei, a shortcut to the railway station and main business areas.

Yummy baby garlic

Look at the baby garlic that we received in our last vegetable delivery. Each head is tiny, only about 2cm in height, but they are so tasty. We put two complete heads into a pasta sauce (which is probably equivalent to about four cloves of regular garlic).

Here you can compare the size to a regular head of garlic.

The road less travelled

I posted a shot a few days ago of Dan Patlansky playing at Kirstenbosch. Here is a shot that I took on the way back to my car. This is actually the main path between the carpark and the concert area, but it just looks so inviting and refreshing. You have to wonder what is waiting just around the corner. Well I am not going to tell you. You shall have to visit the gardens yourself if you wish to find out.

U2 live in Cape Town

U2 Live in Cape Town

U2 played in Cape Town last night. Lois, myself and approx 61998 other people went to watch them paying at Cape Town Stadium. This was my first time in the stadium, and it was a fantastic venue. Everything just went smoothly. The queues at the bar were short, seats were easy to find; people were behaving and just having a great party. Of course, U2 put on a great show.

There was a “no professional camera” rule, so I figured that my old Canon 350D with a 50mm lens (my nifty-fifty) didn’t really count as a professional camera, so I managed to get in a few nice shots.

I am not U2’s biggest fan, but they have done some great songs over the years, and their gig was amazing! If you look at the stage, you can see that it is actually a 360 degree stage, going around in a complete circle with the audience all around the stage. The TV screen above the stage was also panoramic.

Although it was (of course) a rock concert, it came with a pretty awesome light show as well; using the strange spider-like covering as a backdrop from some pretty stunning lighting.

This was my fist time in Cape Town Stadium, and although it does not look that huge from the inside, there were over 62000 people inside, it is massive!

Father and Son

I love this shot; the father on the large windsurfer was surfing next to his son who was on on the smaller board. He was giving advice to his son from across the water. Judging on how the son was doing, he is not going to need advise for much longer. He is already far better that I ever was.

The strangest little boat ever

I saw this boat on Zandvlei at the weekend. It has a fiberglass hull, and you sit in front of the mast and steer with your feet (much as you would with a Kayak). That tiny little homemade sail was not at all effective, but I am sure that with a bigger sail it could be quite a fun experience.

I asked the person that helped to launch the boat, and he told me that the original mast had been stolen so this was a trial of a newhomemade sail. Perhaps a little more time in the workshop is in order…

Dan Patlansky at Kirstenbosch

Dan Patlansky played at Kirstenbosch about two weeks ago. He is only 26, but he plays that Strat like he has been doing it for 50 years. Once of the best blues guitarists I have ever heard.

If you have not heard him play, find out when he is gigging in your area and go see him. It is really worth it.

Dog walking on Muizenberg Beach

Muizenberg beach is a favourite spot for morning dog walking. We often take our dogs for a walk on the beach on the weekends, and they love the space, the freedom and of course socializing with all the other dogs. Mostly all the dogs want to do is run around and have fun; I have seldom seen a scuffle between any dogs.

Of course you don’t need to have a dog to enjoy the beach :-)

Muizenberg beach is one of the reasons that I love living in Lakeside; It truly is magnificent.

Going Fishing

Langebaan is a former fishing village on the West Coast of South Africa about 100km North of Cape Town. Over the last several years, it has grown into a bustling holiday village, with an influxof visitors arriving on the weekends, all going to enjoy the wonderful lagoon.

Even though it is busy, you can still find some quiet places to comtempate and enjoy the world. This fishing boat was shot about 300m in a little bay just in front of our family house, where we spent a wonderful weekend.
