Twin Towers

Ground Zero

Never forget the innocent people that died for no reason, and how the world became a more scary place, and sadly even more divided. I have been to ground zero twice in my life, and both times were sad and moving moments. Looking at the signboard containing the list of names of innocent people died, and listening to the heroic stories was a moving experience.

Ground Zero

Sep 11 happened 11 years ago now, and I truly hope that nothing like it ever happens again.

Church in Rome

I love the old buildings in Europe, especially the Churches with such care put into the lovely architecture.

I don’t know which church this it (if you know please let me know), but it is somewhere on the bus route between the station and Vatican City in Rome (no it is not the Basilica). I particularity love the marble-like clouds framing the dome of the church.

Update: Thanks to Cristina for telling me about the church, it is the Santa Maria di Loreto, built in the 16th century.

Mosque at sunrise

Cape Town has a large Muslim population, and at the moment many of my friends and colleagues are observing the month-long sunrise to sunset fast during the month of Ramadan. While I don’t think that I could survive fasting every day for a month, I have a great deal of respect for my friends that can. It must take tremendous will-power.

While I usually steer away from politics or religion (and the two are tied tightly together), one of the things I love about living in South Africa is the enormous tolerance the different religions have for each other.  It may be naive to say that we judge people by their character, and not by their social, religious or political background. But I feel that (perhaps because of our history), South Africans are  accepting of differences than many other countries.

This photo is of one of the many Mosques in Cape Town.

Cape Town International Airport

Well not quite; I am almost ready to leave on a jet plane for my trip to Spain, but not just yet. This morning Lois left to East London to run a training session, so after I dropped her at the airport I took the opportunity to get a quick shot of the terminal in the quiet of the early morning. Next time I am at the airport should be for my trip!

This shot was inspired by this shot by Trey Ratcliff of Barcelona Airport, perhaps I will get a similar shot when I am there next month.

Clock Tower

The Clock Tower in Cape Town was completed in 1882, and is the gateway to Robin Island. It is a lovely old building which has been beautifully restored.

Blue the Pitbull

I would like you to meet Blue, the Pitbull puppy. Rather unexpectedly, he moved in for a couple of days over the weekend. It all started when I went for a run on Thursday evening, and this lovely little puppy (he is 9 months old) starting following me. And then when he almost got hit by a car I was involved. So I took him home, and he became instant friends with Emily the Golden Retriever. They promptly proceeded to spend the entire evening running up and down the passage, exhausting each other.

Blue the Pitbull

I have always heard horror stories about how violent and dangerous Pitbulls are, but this little boy has turned around any misconception that I ever had. He was the most wonderful, friendly and gentle dog I have ever met (of course with the exception of my own dogs), and I really was a little sad when his owners contacted me and he was reunited.

So Blue if you are reading this, come on over anytime, we would love to see you visit again.

Buitenverwachting manor house

Living in the Cape, you are surrounded by beautiful old Cape Dutch houses. This is the main residence at Buitenverwachting in Constantia. Imaging waking up every morning to that wonderful view of the Constantia vineyards?

Of course while you are there, visit the tasting room, and stock up on their wonderful wines. Or stay for a picnic or a meal in their excellent restaurant.

If you are lucky you might even be able to visit the cellar and see the wines quietly maturing in the barrels.

Pumphouse

I had a meeting in the Gardens yesterday, and on the way back I noticed this strange old building (it probably contains water pumps or something) sticking out into a water reservoir. I love the way it was built to be functional, but to still look pretty. Also can you see the two rows of birds sitting on the railing?

I have been in this suburb about a million times, and it is amazing how you can live in the same place for so long, and think you know an area so well, and yet you still stumble on things that you have no idea existed in the first place. A very unexpected find.

The Bridge Across Forever

On of my favourite books is “The Bridge Across Forever” by Richard Bach, and this bridge just reminded me of the book. I took it this morning on my phone, while waiting for a business breakfast a the  Crystal Towers Hotel in Century City, Cape Town. The footbridge, which connects the hotel to the main shopping centre, is very beautiful and elegant, curving gracefully as it arches across the canal.

It was such a wonderful day to spend a few minutes in the sun.
