What better way to explore the Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna than to turn it into a training run as well? The grounds are huge (over 120 acres), so you can easily walk several kilometres to see everything. So why not run it? I ran over 6k in the grounds and I still didn’t see it all.

But the palace buildings and ground are amazing to visit. Here is a small taste of what you will see. It was pouring with rain, but who cares?

This is about as traditional as Viennese street food goes, the humble Vienna sausage. The Vienna sausages from Vienna are nothing like we get at home. They are not the mass-produced slightly suspect sausages we think of. Rather they are top-quality.

You can find them on almost any street corner, usually served sliced with (not on) a roll, with a little mustard or tomato sauce on the side. They are great value and perfect for filling the lunch-time gap.

A heuriger is a wine-bar/restaurant on a wine farm which has a special licence to sell the recent harvest for onsite consumption. In short, you get great food and wine cheaply.

We were recommended Heuriger 10er Marie, and it was so good that we went there twice. The outside is deceptively quiet, but it is busy inside, mostly with locals.

Both times we went we had a fantastic time. The food is great, the crowds are boisterous, the wine flows freely, and you have a great time.

If you are in Vienna, a visit to a heuriger is a must!

This is one of those metro platforms that you just have to take a photo of. It is the Wien Westbahnhof train station, a massive station in Vienna, but most importantly where you hop onto the metro to get to our favourite restaurant in Vienna – Heuriger 10er Marie – a local wine-tavern, which I will talk about in my next post.

St. Stephen’s Cathedral, Vienna. I love shooting the old gothic cathedrals. They are awe-inspiring, and this one is no exception. It staggers me that these buildings were build with no machines or computers over 700 years ago!

Here is some of the detail in the magnicifant Vienna Opera House. While I did not manage to see a show, I did have the opportunity to visit the auditorium and entertainment rooms.

Every night they put on a different production, which includes all costumes and sets. This means that if you are in Vienna, you can see a different opera every night.

Here is just a sample of the wonderful interior.

Today we celebrate one of the greatest composers to ever live, Ludwig van Beethoven. He was born 245 years ago today. I play several of his pieces, and have even sung to Ode to Joy (in German) while being conducted by the Ben Zander, the conductor of the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra. I am sure you know his music, but if not look out for the Moonlight Sonata, or Symphany #5 or #9.

When we were in Vienna last year I made a pilgrimage to visit his grave in the Central Cemetery in Vienna.
